The Manchurian Candidate Remake (DVD Review)

"The American people are terrified. They know something's coming."

another solid effort from Demme when I thought he was starting to loose the plot. I've never been a big fan (my personal fav is probably Married To The Mob), but he's always consistently interesting, his head is screwed on right, and he'd never stoop to cliched formula to woo an audience. An excellent cast, headed by better than usual Denzel, with able support from Liev Schreiber, and an hysterical turn by Meryl Streep as Angela Lansbury/Hilary Clinton, is backed by wonderful production values and a top drawer script.
This film was never going to match the original film, so they wisely contemparized (is that a word?) it, keying it within the context of the current election at the time, delving into issues of corporate meddling and the whatnot.
The DVD is solid with an excellent transfer and the usual featurettes, deleted scenes et al. The commentary was unpreviewed, but I'm sure I'll get back to it at some point as Demme is always a lively speaker.
