The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (DVD Review)

"Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges."

this film is a treasure and no amount of bagging from me is going to change that. Bogart sometimes overacts and some of the character turns aren't as subtle as they should be, but this is still an exciting work from an up-and-coming director. this kid's gonna go places I feel. he frames a story simply and to the point, nothing fancy, but not workmanlike either. it feels natural, organic as though it just happened. Walter Huston in one of his last screen roles, is perhaps the best actor in the film. as I said, bogart is disappointing, he has some good scenes, but too often he resorts to manic cliches as he turns against his friends. you want a good bogart go see in a lonely place.
the print is in fair condition for a restored film from 1948. the extras were unpreviewed at this time.
